To be fair, the ocean was only the final boss. We already knew the capacitors after our 12-volt-to-19-volt buck converter were not quite large enough to carry the NUC-form-factor Linux computer through the voltage dip when we cranked the engine—especially with the race radios, helmet pumpers, CVT blower, Starlink, GoPro chargers, and nearly every other hungry electron consumer switched on.

When the computer rebooted, it occasionally ate the stream. It should not have. OBS was scripted to recover automatically. Usually it tried. Sometimes it apparently looked at Baja, reconsidered its career choices, and never came back.

It makes us feel slightly better that our telemetry system—a couple of ESP32s, MQTT, and a Google Bigtable feed running through the same computer—recovered just fine. The telemetry marched on. The livestream, however, had a habit of dying dramatically and refusing all attempts at resuscitation.

Then came Hurricane Rachel. With an exceptionally high tide and seawater reaching halfway up the steering wheel, our little Linux computer literally ate sand. The saltwater encouraged the electrons on the motherboard to swim in circles, abandon ship, disperse into the wilderness, and generally short out anything they could find. The board has not booted since beginning its brief career as a submarine. So yes: blame it on Rachel!

For the next race, we will return with different cameras, a different compute and power setup, and a much tougher livestream system. We will also issue life preservers to every electron, carry at least twenty tiny lifeboats, and keep a couple of flotation donuts on standby.
